Raccoons in the attic, chimney or garage.

What you are dealing with

What you can see is usually part of it.

Raccoons climb the big trees on Swarthmore streets and step straight onto the roof. From there a loose soffit board or an open chimney is all they need.

Most calls are heavy footsteps overhead at night, or scratching and chattering in the chimney. In spring there is usually a mother with kits.

Any of these help us work out what is in there.

  • Heavy walking in the attic after dark
  • Chattering or scratching in the chimney
  • A soffit board, vent or shingles torn back
  • Knocked-over trash cans or rolled-up sod
  • Droppings in one spot on the roof or deck

The scope

What we look at, and what the job usually involves.

What we inspect

  1. The attic above where you hear it
  2. The chimney flue and whether it has a cap
  3. Soffits, roof vents and the roof edge
  4. Branches and wires that reach the house

What the work may include

  1. Finding the den and any kits
  2. Trapping the adults
  3. Making sure every kit is out
  4. Sealing the opening with heavy steel mesh or sheet metal

What happens next

How the job runs.

  1. Find the den

We check the attic, the chimney and the roof edge for where it sleeps and how it gets in.

  2. Look for kits

From March to July we look for young first, so nothing is left behind when the hole is closed.

  3. Remove and seal

Once every raccoon is out we close the opening with steel they cannot tear through.

Price and timing

What changes the price.

Raccoon jobs usually take more than one visit, because we confirm they are all out before the hole is shut. You get the plan on the first visit.

  • Attic, chimney or outbuilding
  • Whether there is a litter of kits
  • How high the opening is
  • How much of the roof edge needs closing

Questions people ask

What to know about raccoon removal.

Why is it only noisy at night?

Raccoons sleep in the day and go out after dark. What you hear is them leaving and coming back.

Is there a raccoon in my chimney?

Scratching and chattering inside an uncapped chimney in spring is often a mother with kits. Do not light a fire. Call and we will check.

Do you fix the damage?

We close the opening once they are out and tell you about anything else we find on the roof.
