Bats in the attic: how they are removed, and when

Bats that feed over the Crum Woods and the creek often roost in the attics and chimneys of older houses nearby.

Signs of a colony

  • Bats leaving the roof at dusk
  • Dark droppings piled under one spot in the attic
  • Brown stains around a small gap on the outside of the house
  • Squeaking in a wall in the evening

Why bats are not trapped

Bats are let out through one-way exits fitted over the gaps they use. They fly out to feed and cannot get back in. After that, the gaps are sealed.

Why the time of year matters

In early summer, mother bats have young that cannot fly. Sealing the house then would trap the young inside, so the sealing is planned for when they can fly.

If a bat gets into the living space

Close the door to the room, open a window and keep people and pets out. If someone may have been bitten, or the bat was in a room where someone was asleep, call your doctor.
